Sports leagues always operate with the same sets of rules within their league. There may be slight variations that are unique to each league, but the logic behind it is similar. Often, these rules will change a bit as the sport evolves, or due to current constraints. One of which are the changes to the NBA gameplay.
For instance, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, many sports leagues have reduced the number of games in the preseason, or removed preseason games. Some, like the NBA, have even changed how teams will get into the playoffs. While it does not happen every year, there are yet again some adjustments. For this coming season the Board of Governors of the NBA will be meeting to decide the fate of some of these proposed changes. One of the most crucial ones, is that only coach’s challenges will be the only form of out-of-bounds reviews in the final two minutes of a game. This is big, since there is a growing trend of video reviews during this specific period in the game over the years. Currently, any of the close out-of-bounds decisions in the last two minutes of an NBA games can be reviewed by the referees if they are uncertain, or would like to review it.
Of course, this is a valid issue, as referees would not want to commit a mistake that far in to a game, especially if the result of the review can change the outcome of a game. However, the rule somewhat allowed practically all of the out-of-bounds calls in the last two minutes to be reviewed, which is very time consuming. Referees also tend to use this as a way to determine the call, when they could easily do it in real time as they always have. This can ruin the momentum of the players, and the league also wants less stoppages as much as possible. If approved, the new rule will change this. Teams will not suffer, as the coaches can, after all, raise a challenge to review the call.
