Yokohama Withdraws Bid as Casino Resort Host
Japan has been planning to have certain prefectures host integrated resorts that aims to bring in casino gaming, entertainment, and other such amenities to help bolster the local economy and encourage tourism. Over the past few years, prefectures have been submitting proposals and applications to host one of the Integrated Resorts (IR) in the country. Recently, however, instead of wanting to open a casino, Yokohama withdraws bid to host an IR.
The New Mayor of Yokohama has announced that they will be withdrawing their bid to host a casino resort. This is due to local concerns about gambling addiction, as well as public safety issues. Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka, who was also elected in an anti-casino campaign backed by the opposition, said that they will immediately stop the process of bidding for an IR spot. This will be one of his first acts as Mayor.
Yokohama Withdraws Bid
Yokohama, being the second most populous city in the country is also not able to move in terms of their proposal. Former interested international partners have withdrawn their interest in the Yokohama IR project. So far, Osaka, Wakayama and Nagasaki prefectures are still intent to push through with IR plans in their areas.
While many are against the idea, the country still has support on the proposed IRs. They hold the potential to attract tourism, boost employment, as well as the local economy. While an online casino solution is the most affordable way to earn from casino gaming, Japan’s IR plans are much more complex. Retail, entertainment and other amenities will be integrated into each casino complex that can hold luxury hotels, sports events, conferences, and more.
