Gambling in Spain Continues to Grow
Gambling in Spain continues to grow in the first quarter of the year, according to the report from the Directorate General of Gaming (DGOJ). Most market reports you will see in the top gambling industry news sites reflects the same growth, and this continues to show us that even with slight declines on the short-term, year-on-year numbers continue to be positive.
The Gross Gaming Revenue (or GGR), is one of the main indicators that the gambling industry uses. When you are in the process of becoming a bookie, this will be important for you to track, especially when you want to see how much your gaming business is making. For Spain, the GGR for Q1 is $333 million, 2.8% lower than 2022’s Q4. But it does give us a whopping 51% year-on-year increase.
In addition, gambling activity has increased in most markets in Europe, and around the world, as the FIFA World Cup was held during 2022 Q4. You can check sports forums to get insights on big sports events that can impact your sportsbook’s handle and revenue.
Gambling in Spain is Growing Industry
Sports betting in Spain continues to be one of the main drivers for the increase in gaming activity in the country. In fact, sports betting contributes 42.8% of the GGR in 2023 Q1. Casino gaming remains the top contributor, of course, with 47.02 of the GGR in 2023 Q1 coming from casinos.
In the first quarter of this year, casinos have a GGR of $156.6 million, this gives us a 0.64% quarter-on-quarter growth. Looking at year-on-year data, we see an increase of 29.19%. The popularity if casino gaming is attributed to the growing popularity of slots and live roulette, with both games seeing activity increasing by 31-32%.
Even though the country has current restrictions on advertising, promotions and sponsorships on gambling that was implemented last year, the industry continues to grow. There are less new players since then, but given the increase in activity and GGR, it means that sportsbooks and casinos do not need to spend more to earn more. This also makes the Spanish gambling market more resilient, and therefore one of the stronger gambling markets.
